Geothermal Heating Explained

When our clients come to us looking for the most energy-efficient heating solution, the answer is simple.

Geothermal heating can lower your annual energy bills by 30-70%!

This type of heating system uses a powerful and renewable energy source to operate. Making it the most energy-efficient heating solution that we offer at Gravenhurst Heating. And saving our local homeowners from hefty energy bills, costly fuel refills and a large carbon footprint.

Find out how geothermal heating works below!

How Does Geothermal Heating Work?

Geothermal heating uses the earth’s thermal properties to bring heat into your home. But how does this process actually work? To some, it might simply look like magic. But, if you look beneath the surface (literally), you’ll find a huge network of ground loops that make the entire process possible.

To answer the question, “how does geothermal heating work”, we’ll have to dig in a bit!

3 individual parts of a geothermal heating system:

  1. Outdoor ground loop

The ground loop is an underground piping system filled with fluid. Its job is to carry heated fluid to the heat pump.

  1. Indoor heat pump

The heat pump removes the heat energy from the fluid. It then regulates the consistency of the heat and sends it to the distribution system.

  1. Indoor distribution system

The distribution system consists of either ductwork or radiant in-floor piping that helps carry heat to different rooms in your home.

How do these geothermal HVAC parts work together?

Step 1: A geothermal heat pump connects to the renewable solar energy stored in the ground.

Step 2: Heat energy exchanges with the earth through the underground piping.

Step 3: The fluid in the underground piping is then brought up to the heat pump.

Step 4: The heat exchanger within the heat pump then uses the energy to heat the air or water that’s passing through the unit.

Step 5: Lastly, that heated air or water is then circulated through the home using the home’s distribution system.

How Warm Does Geothermal Heating Get?

The temperature of the outdoor air is highly unpredictable. Varying greatly from day to night and winter to summer. But the temperature just a few feet below the earth’s surface maintains an average of 3°-10° Celcius year-round. Making it a much more reliable source of heat energy.

With this steady form of heat energy, geothermal heating can produce approximately 3-4.5kW of heat for every 1kW of electricity.

How does this affect your geothermal heating monthly cost? Let’s put that into perspective!

High-efficiency geothermal systems can haul in five units of heat energy to operate. With four of those units being 100% free! This means that our 3, 5 and 7 series systems could deliver around $4 of FREE heat energy for every $1 of electrical energy used.

On top of that, your geothermal HVAC system will operate at 400 percent energy efficiency the second you turn it on!

With these savings, this system can pay you back within approximately 5 years of your initial geothermal heating installation.

Why Choose Geothermal Heating?

Geothermal heating could be the best heating solution for you! Whether you are in the middle of a new home construction in Bracebridge or replacing an old heating unit in your Muskoka cottage.

And if the above energy and cost savings aren’t reason enough for a geothermal heating installation, there are many other benefits to consider as well.
